15. Learn How The Ancient Maya Cultivated Chewing Gum (AKA Chicle)
Have you ever thought about where chewing gum actually came from? Probably not. But its history is fascinating.
Gum, also known locally here as “chicle” was born in the Yucatán Peninsula.
Not only have the ancient Maya contributed their huge wisdom and vision to astronomy and architecture but also something within the reach of almost everyone, chewing gum!
Known among the Maya as “sicté,” meaning “essential fluid,” it was once completely natural, with white color and without flavors or added sugar.
It is still used today in Mexico for artisan and organic production.
Men scale tall “chicozapote,” trees close to Sian Kaan and cut the bark to extract the white resin.
The resin is sundried in blocks and is cut into sheets for the gum. On this tour, they add cinnamon or a sprig of mint for you to try for yourself.
