Ziplines in Riviera Maya- What to Look for & Avoid

Everyone who has traveled to Cancun knows this:

Cancun is not all there is. It simply opens the door to the Riviera Maya. Here you can enjoy a bevy of travel destinations, each with their own set of entertaining attractions.

Today we’re going to focus on Ziplines in Riviera Maya:

  1. What to look for
  2. What to avoid
  3. How to prepare

Cancun Mexico

A.     Riviera Maya Zip Lines – What to look for

1. Location.

The best ziplines in the Riviera Maya are the ones you can actually get to. Makes sense, right?

That’s why picking a zipline tour operator like Selvatica is your best bet. Selvatica is located right in the epicenter of the Riviera Maya (in between Cancun and Playa del Carmen) …AND

Selvatica offers FREE roundtrip transportation aboard an air-conditioned van, when purchased online.

2. Variety is the spice of life—even for ziplines!

Nobody likes repeating the same thing over and over. The same goes for ziplines!

That’s why Selvatica offers 4 different kinds of zipline experiences.

 I. Superman Zipline

the Superman Zipline

They say standing in a super-hero pose boosts your confidence…

Now imagine how you’ll feel after soaring through the air in the ultimate super-hero pose: the flying superman!

II. Cenote Splash Zipline

Zipline Cenote
What better way to cap off a zipline experience than a quick splash and swim in a refreshing cenote?

III. Glove-Control Zipline

Glove control Zipline

Some like it fast. Some like it not-so-fast. With Glove-Control Zipline, you decide! Just squeeze to slow down, and release for maximum velocity!

IV. Tarzania: The Human Roller-Coaster

Tarzania The human Roller Coaster
Tarzania is like the result of some mad scientist creating some ultra-exciting zipline+roller-coaster hybrid.

You’ve never seen anything like it…

Try the Human Roller-Coaster (exclusive to Selvatica).

Bonus Zipline:

If you’re feeling bold, talk to the zipline operator to try one of the ziplines UPSIDE-DOWN!

B.     Riviera Maya Ziplines – What to Avoid

3. Avoid parks with only one kind of zipline

Ziplines in Cancun
Trust me. You’re going to get bored.

4. Pick a place near you (w/ FREE transportation)

Free transportation to Selvatica

Pick an operator near you (who wants to spend their whole day traveling?) and offers free transportation (save your money!)

5. Avoid Brand-New Establishments

Selvatica more than 10 years of experience

You want a zipline tour company like Selvatica, that has years and years of experience.

That’s the kind of proven safety track record you can trust.

6. Stay away from tours with bad user-review

Selvatica Tripadvisor Hall of fame winner

Trust your peers. If they have complaints, listen to them. On the other hand…

If the rave about a zip line tour in the Riviera Maya, heed their advice.

For example, Selvatica averages a perfect 5.0 on Trip Advisor.

C.     How to prepare for zip lines while visiting the Mayan Riviera

7. Arrive with energy

Arrive with energy
This means…

Don’t come hung-over

Try relaxing the day before so your muscles aren’t sore.

Avoid coffee the morning of (this can make you nauseous if you’re susceptible to it)

8. Bring all your necessities

Bring all your necessities
This may seem obvious, but it’s so easy to overlook something. Especially if you’re packing the day of.

Here’s a zipline checklist to help you out:

1. Spare clothes & shoes

Remember, there’s a good chance everything your wearing is either going to get wet (in the cenote or via rain) or muddy. This includes your shoes.

So bring extras!

2. Bring plastic bags

So where did you plan on putting those wet clothes? Bring a plastic bag to isolate your wet clothes.

3. Bring a sweater/blanket

A sweater in the Riviera Maya!?

Seems like crazy talk but it makes sense because you’re going to be coming out of a cenote, and heading into a van with AC.

4. Bring cash

Use it to pay for souvenirs, hand out tips, pay for lockers, buy professional photographs.

5. Eat a light breakfast

Eat something light before you come. Maybe some cereal with chopped fruit. Avoid heavy breakfasts, like eggs or pancakes.

Let’s dive in!

1. Where is Selvatica (and how do I get there)?

When booking or considering a tour on your next vacation, the first question that pops into anyone’s head is, ‘how do I get there?’.

It’s natural, especially when you are in a new and unfamiliar place. No one likes to waste time on vacation getting lost.

Fear not!

Every tour and program that Selvatica offers provides you with the option to pay for roundtrip transportation.

This means that no matter where you’re staying Selvatica will come and get you and drop you off again at your desired location.

Winner!

However, if you are somewhat of an adventurist and you prefer arriving on your own, here’s how to do it.

Try  Google Map Directions to Selvatica.

Mexico, and this region of the Yucatan, in general, is fairly easy to navigate. The highways are straight and as long as you know where to get off you it’s a piece of cake.

TIP:

If you’re traveling here from another country, your mobile data coverage may not be reliable here.

What to do in this case?

Don’t worry. Download these Google Maps into your phone from a Wi-Fi connection and you will be able to access them at all times.

Here are the official instructions on how to do that.

Selvatica can be found in the heart of the jungle half way between Playa del Carmen and Cancun, close to Puerto Morelos.

When coming to the Caribbean it’s easy to become mesmerized by the pristine powdery white sands, and impressive hotels that dominate the coastlines but there’s an understated side of paradise that often goes unnoticed.

We believe the jungle deserves your attention!

Its lush setting provides the perfect backdrop for the ultimate outdoor adventure. You won’t find anything like this anywhere else.

3. What makes Selvatica’s zip lines the most thrilling in Cancun?

Variety is the spice of life. Everyone knows that. Who wants to ride the same zip line over and over?

Boring right?

Well, you won’t have to at Selvatica. Because here there are 4 different kinds of ziplines:

The inventors here wracked their brains to bring you the most fun and innovative ziplines imaginable.

1. Superman Zipline

Make your childhood dreams come true!

Fly like superman on the Superflight at Selvatica

Get your Superman on with this face-first zipline!

If you ever wished that your superpower could be that you can fly, then dreams really do come true at Selvatica!

You can’t help but feel a real sense of accomplishment after this one.

2. Cenote Splash Zipline

Time to cool off!

Jump into a cenote in the Riviera Maya

After all the excitement and adrenaline of whizzing through the hot Mexican jungle what better way to cap off the day than to cool off in a refreshing fresh water cenote.

In case you didn’t know cenotes are a stunning natural phenomenon unique to this area of the world. Once considered by the ancient Maya to be the portals to the netherworld these freshwater swimming areas should be on everyone’s bucket list.

The water here has been filtered through million-year-old rock formations. It’s fresh, not salty, and feels holistic to the skin.

Cenotes are visually stunning and the one here at Selvatica definitely won’t disappoint.

As if that wasn’t enough, there’s the opportunity to make a splash and zip line into the water!

Yipee-ki-yay!

3. Glove Control Zipline

The power is in your hands!

Zipline with glove control at Selvatica

This exhilarating zip line allows you to set your own speed by keeping a grip on the wire with your specially designed glove. Use a tighter grip to slow down or release for full velocity.

How fast will you dare to go?

After this one, you will feel like a successful conqueror of the outdoors.

4. Tanzania: The Human Roller-Coaster

Full of mega twists and turns!

The human roller coaster

Is it a roller-coaster? Or is it a zip line? Or is it something so amazing, you’ve never even seen it before!?

You’ll have to try it out to find out for sure!

Tanzania is one of the favorites here at Selvatica, it’s innovative design combines all of our favorite thrills into one epic ride full of exciting twists and turns.

On this zip line don’t expect to simply expect to head in a downwards motion Tanzania will take you in every direction possible.

Are you ready for the ride?

4. The Staff at Selvatica

Teamwork makes the dream work!

the Selvatica Team

The experience here at Selvatica wouldn’t have earned its accolades if it wasn’t for the enthusiastic, professional, and fun staff that work here!

Selvatica only hires the best!

All you have to do is take one look at the TripAdvisor reviews to see just how many times visitors are praising the staff. Unlike other zip lining competitors in the region, Selvatica offers a personalized experience.

You are definitely NOT left to your own devices.

You traverse the course together in a small group, and the same guide stays with you throughout the entire course and even gets to know you on a first name basis.

5. Selvatica’s Social Commitment

Selvatica cares deeply about two things:

  1. Our planet
  2. Our people

The Seed of Life Program

As we already know Planet Earth is in trouble.

Our seed of life program

As deforestation increases, so to do our carbon footprints.

. Selvatica relies on the jungle to provide the ultimate outdoor experience! That’s why as a debt of honor they are dedicated to giving something back and creating a sustainable infrastructure.

You can join them in their efforts to shrink the carbon footprint!

The Seed of Life Program at Selvatica has so far planted over 300,000 trees with that number rising every single day.

These trees absorb over 7.8 millions of tons of CO2 every year! Pretty impressive, right?

On Selvatica’s new Beyond tour you will be able to plant a seed which, in turn, will help our planet breathe easier in many years to come.

The Helping Hands Program

Selvatica takes a hands-on approach when it comes to helping better the lives of impoverished youths.
This program helps provide sporting equipment/leagues and technical training to more than 100 former juvenile gang members.

La escuelita foundation

With your help, Selvatica can rehabilitate these troubled youths and pave a new and positive path for them to follow.

So, there you have it. Now you see why Selvatica is the King of Cancun Ziplines!

ATV Tours in Cancun: Everything you need to know

Beach party in Cancun

Cancun is the land of adventure. Some find adventure in the form of tequila fueled beach-side parties.

Others want something raw. Something more real. And riding an ATV in Cancun gives them exactly what they’re looking for.

Do you share that opinion? Perfect!

Then read this article to find out everything you need to know about Cancun ATV tours.

How to pick the right ATV in Cancun:

aerial view airplane at selvatica

First off. Make sure to pick a place like Selvatica Adventure Park, that offers LEGITIMATE ATVs.

What does that even mean?

It means don’t be fooled by what some of our competitors offer: glorified golf-carts that promise amphibious capabilities (they don’t).

You want a Polaris ATV (like Selvatica offers) that truly responds to your every command. You want instant acceleration. You want turn-on-a-dime handling. You want shock-absorbs that eat potholes for breakfast as a light snack.

The lesson? Make sure you pick Selvatica’s Polaris ATV (or don’t get surprised if you’re left with a glorified golf-cart).

ATV Riding in Cancun – What to Expect at Selvatica:

It’s very simple. Expect a wild adventure powered by a Polaris ATV.

But with Selvatica’s Offroad Polaris Tour, except more than just bold ATVs.

Here’s what else you get:

  • 10 Zipline circuit
  • Cenote swim
  • Tarzania- The Human Roller-Coaster
  • 4 Aerial Bridges

You see? Selvatica makes sure you have the ultimate Cancun off-roading experience by including other entertaining attractions.

How much does Selvatica’s Offroad Polaris Tour costs?

Adult Price: $155 USD

Child Price: $85 USD

TIP: Book online & ahead of time and you can get even LOWER prices.

Cancun Off-Roading – How to Prepare:

Don’t come hung over! Try to be in the best form possible, physically and mentally. Be ready for an adventure!

If you can, pick a rainy day to go. Instead of sulking in your hotel over bad weather, make lemonade have a fun day in the mud with an all-terrain-vehicle.

What to Bring:

What to wear while going on a Cancun Tour

Comfortable clothes & shoes – Something that can get dirty and dry quickly

Spare clothes & shoes – You don’t want to come back home with wet clothes & shoes

Bathing suit – So you can swim in the cenote

Plastic bag – To put your wet clothes in

Towel– To get dry

Mosquito spray & Suntan lotion – Preferably bio-friendly because you will be in the jungle

Cash – To pay tips to the crew if you see it fit, and to bring home souvenirs or professional pictures

Add-Ons:

Selvatica Boutique Adds-on

Transportation – Get door to door transportation.

Insurance – Get full coverage on your ATV in case of an accident

Lockers – Keep all belongs safe while you tour. Remember, your smartphones + car keys, can EASILY get lost while on ATVs, ziplines and cenotes.

Recap:

  1. Make sure you pick a company like Selvatica that uses authentic ATVs (not glorified golf-carts) & offers ziplines, cenotes, & hanging aerial bridges as well.
  2. Come ready for an adventure (not hungover!)
  3. Bring spare everything and get a locker because things will get wet!
  4. Buy online in advance to save money!

Mud madness at Selvatica

Selvatica works with dynamic pricing to always help you get the best deal.

This means that there is no fixed price. It can change depending on the date you book, what time, and how many people for.

However, just as an example to give you a rough idea of what to expect, during high season, on Thursday 15th March 2018, at 10.30 am adult prices are as follows:

  • Extreme Canopy  $70-80
  • Gimme All $140
  • Offroad Polaris 117-130

Please note prices are significantly lower if you book online and in advance, so we would recommend that you do this.

You can speak to someone from the live chat on their website who will give you an instant answer and assist you if you have any questions.

Selvatica also has a page on their website dedicated to promotions, where it’s likely you’ll find deals like ‘save 30%‘ or ‘pair Selvatica with a trip to Dolphinaris‘, be sure to check it out so you don’t miss out on great savings.

The Competitor

The leading competitors also offer dynamic pricing but options are much more limited.

The only variations in tours that they offer are if you want to go during the day or at night time.

selvatica

Again, you do save money if you book online in advance, but you do not have the opportunity to choose a time slot, it’s more of just a ‘free for all’, but we will dig a deeper into that in a little while.

A rough example of an adult price during high season, on March 15, 2018, is $108.

Location + Transportation

Location + transportation can be a huge factor when it comes to deciding which attraction is best for you.

You don’t want to spend most of your time traveling, but you also want the trip to be worthwhile.

Selvatica

Selvatica enjoys a privileged position halfway between Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

So, regardless of which hotel you stay at either side, you won’t be more than a 30-minute journey away from all the action.

Your pricing includes private round-trip transportation and you can expect to be picked up on time in a small, comfortable, clean, air-conditioned van operated by a safe driver.

Trnasport at selvatica

The Competition

The competition can be located on the south side of Playa del Carmen as if you were heading for Puerto Aventuras.

Their pricing doesn’t pick up outliers up with small contract vans.

Usually, they arrive in the style of a large “school bus”, which can quickly get tedious adding a solid hour to your journey on both ends of your day because you have to drop so many different people off at different locations.

Ziplines

For newcomers, the ziplines are what both attractions have become synonymous with and notorious for!

Your time at each of the parks will be spent with a few hours zip lining. Both experiences are of course, immensely fun, but extremely different in nature.

Who’d have thought you could reinvent this thrilling adventure in two completely different ways?

So, what makes them so different?

Selvatica

Selvatica prides itself on variation and personalisation.

Your experience at Selvatica is never going to be underwhelming. Why?

Because the park doesn’t just have one style zip line that you ride over and over again. Oh no, at Selvatica the creators believe that variety is the spice of life and monotony is the killer of all fun.

At Selvatica the different zip lines you will encounter include:

1. Tanzania AKA “The Human Roller-Coaster”

They call Tanzania, “The Human Roller-Coaster”, due to its one-of-a-kind zipline track you won’t find anywhere else.

tarzania the human roller coaster

Innovative and completely unique in style, you can expect not only to zoom down through the jungle, but to twist and turn, go up and down, and experience a thrill unlike any other.

 2. Superflight  “The Superman Zipline”

Did you ever grow up wondering what it would feel like to be Superman for the day?

superflight at selvatica

Now you no longer have to wonder, you can sail through the air as if you were a real superhero by flying face-first through the jungle.

3. Glove Control Zipline

On this exhilarating zip line, you can keep a tight grip for a more controlled experience…or release your grip for full velocity!

glove control zipline at selvatica

You’re in control, so have fun, and take flight!

4. Upside Down Zipline

How do you take something already extreme to the next level?

By doing it upside down, of course!

Get a new perspective on the jungle and see it from all angles.

upside down at selvatica

Your trip to Selvatica will enable you to conquer 4 completely different zip lines. You will leave with a real sense of accomplishment.

Perfect for travelers looking for a real thrill of adrenaline.

5. Cenote Splash Zipline

Ready for the ultimate conclusion to a zipline?

Then try the exciting Cenote Splash Zipline!

make a splash in our lukuma cenote

The Competition

The competition does offer some variation in their zip lines too, albeit they are not as extreme.

You will fly down each of them in the generic seated position.

However, here the ziplines boast exhilarating heights, they differ in length, and the occasional zipline also incorporates water into the mix (so prepare to get wet while you’re zooming through the air too).

water ziplines.

Safety

Safety is of paramount importance at both of the parks.

Both attractions pride themselves on the infallible precautions and procedures that have been cemented into the brand’s core values.

They each proudly boast the latest and most up-to-date technology that is regularly checked and approved by the ACCT.

In case you are wondering why one park may have one zip line for support and the other has two, or if you have any questions about the safety at each of the parks, I recommend you read this review that is responded to by the Director of Selvatica.

ATV / Polaris

For me when I hear ATV or Polaris I expect a real speed demon NOT a glorified golf-buggy.

You didn’t pay for something mediocre, you paid for a real adventure!

Selvatica

At Selvatica you will be given a 4-seater Polaris RZR, which can comfortably accommodate 2 adults and 2 children.

These state-of-the-art vehicles are exactly that, state-of-the-art!

If you were to buy one of these back home in the states it would cost you close to 15k!

selvatica ATV

They are a real treat to drive, especially if you’re into powerful motors.

There is enough power behind these things to satisfy the craving of every petrol head.

At Selvatica you can pay a small fee of around $15 dollars and breathe easy knowing that you are insured if anything at all was to happen to the vehicle.

The Competition

The competition only uses utility-class Gators that max out at about 12mph, BIG difference.

So if you’re looking for speed you’re not going to find it here, unfortunately.

By comparison, the competition is slow, but you can expect to see some epic scenery on the journey round. It gives you a chance to soak up the sites of caves, bridges, and different terrains.

Preference really does depend on what you’re hoping for.

Swimming / Cenote

You’re in the Riviera Maya, natural beauty is a given!

Mexico is home to some incredibly beautiful greenery, and stunning cenotes unique to this area of the world.

It’s absolutely vital that you visit at least one cenote during your visit to Mexico. They’re magical.

 Selvatica

At Selvatica by the time you reach the cenote to cap off you’re the day it’s almost inevitable you will have worked up a sweat.

Prepare for a relaxing and cooling experience at the onsite cenote.

selvatica cenote

Visually it’s stunning, but the waters are just sublime. You will have around 40 minutes here to soak up the sights, relax, and enjoy the water.

Not only that, there is the opportunity to zip-line into the water!

You will have a ton of fun rounding off your adventurous day.

Cue CANNONBALL!

Canonball!

The Competition

The competitions park involves a lot of water throughout the entire day, so if you don’t feel like spending the day soggy maybe it isn’t for you.

That said,  on a warm say it isn’t too much of an issue.

The cenote and swimming at this attraction are largely underground (so be warned: it can get cool), as part of a series of caverns and underground rivers, whereas the one at Selvatica is not enclosed.

For people who don’t deal well with small spaces, it is important to take this into consideration when weighing up your options.

If you are interested in learning more about stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over millions of years this is a good opportunity for you to do so.

Overall the swimming and cenote experience at the competitions park is very picturesque and pleasant.

Food

All that adventure is sure to work up your appetite.

Luckily for you, food is provided at both of the parks.

You can expect to eat things like chicken, guacamole,  beans, chips, salad, and rice.

Selvatica.

One of Selvaticas core values is to keep things as eco-friendly as possible and to reduce the carbon footprint dramatically.

They have invested large amounts of money into planting more trees, which you can read all about on their the ‘Seed of Life Program’ section on their website.

So, if you are wondering why there is no bottled water at Selvatica, this is why.

Alternatively, they offer, fresh, safe, cool water in cone cups that are made from recycled materials.

Organization and Efficiency

Nobody likes waiting around (especially British people), so with popularity must come organization!

With so many people choosing parks like Selvatica things have to be efficient otherwise navigating the attraction would be pure chaos.

Selvatica

Selvatica prides itself on its personal and intimate approach to adventure.

Here you will be part of a small tribe and your guide will take the time to get to know your name and make you laugh.

Staff at Selvatica are widely recognized on TripAdvisor as ‘incredible’, and often are what makes the experience SO memorable for thousands of visitors.

Despite the popularity of the attraction, Selvatica never exceeds its capacity to function seamlessly.

The tours here run like clockwork, meaning you never have to wait to get on to a particular attraction.

The guides are in constant communication with one another, and you will never be stood around waiting for the next thing to happen.

It’s completely flawless.

the guides have the best customer service

The Competition

It’s like going to Disneyland and all the magic is taken away because you have to queue for long periods of time to get on to a ride.

The competitions itinerary is much more of a ‘free for all’, and during peak times and season, it can feel a little chaotic.

You are almost left to your own devices, different guides wait for you at different podiums or areas of the park. Whereas at Selvatica the same guide journeys with you throughout the entire experience.

You need the whole day at Xplor to do absolutely everything but without a personal guide, it’s likely you may miss something or not get the absolute most of out of the experience.

Conclusion

It’s decision time!

It’s great that you’ve taken the time out to weigh up your different options rather than agreeing to the first offer you discovered and risk all that disappointment.

Both parks are successful and ultimately it comes down to what you want from your experience.

If you’re looking for thrilling, adrenaline adventure, with different options to suit your specific wants and needs, then without a doubt Selvatica is the option for you.

If you are looking for a more relaxing, less thrilling adventure, with a slower pace but incredible scenery then the competition may be the way to go.

In the end, we just want to you to have the best experience possible so be sure to choose wisely. 😉

Yet one outdoor activity has done the impossible in this ultra-competitive environment…

That outdoor activity? Selvatica Adventure Park.

That’s right. For over 6 consecutive years, Selvatica Adventure Park has maintained the #1 outdoor activity for Trip Advisor.

Selvatica #1 on Trip advisor-Reason Selvatica Park Dominates Trip Advisor

How has Selvatica accomplished such an impossible task?

Is it the…

  • Five different types of ziplines available?
  • Revitalizing and refreshing cenotes?
  • Top-of-the-line 4WD ATVs?
  • Wobbly high-above-ground Skywalk?
  • Bucket-list shortening bungee swing?

The answer? NOPE.

Well—of course—that has something to do with it.

But that doesn’t tell the full story. In fact, the real answer may surprise you.

Read this article to find out The Surprising Reason Selvatica Park Dominates Trip Advisor.

We’re going to tell you…

  1. What it means to be part of the Selvatica Tribe
  2. Why superior customer service is a necessity for extreme activities
  3. How this approach has led to Selvatica’s domination of Trip Advisor’s rankings (with real, unedited Trip Advisor reviews for verification)

Why Trip Advisor

Why do 80 million people every month use Trip Advisor to research their next trip?

Because they can trust the information they find there. It comes from regular folks who’ve visited there before. Not some promotional marketing message from the company.

So, in the spirit of Trip Advisor, let’s allow Trip Advisor reviewers to tell their story. Let’s try to find the common dominator in the reviews.

The Selvatica Tribe

When you’re at Selvatica, you’re not just another traveler. You’re part of the tribe.

That means, from the get-go, everyone will be split into groups led by tribe leaders.

This is a big deal. Why?

Because small groups mean…

  1. A well-coordinated experience with very short lines
  2. No time wasted wondering what to do or where to go next

At Selvatica, Customer Service is King

Having a group leader coordinate your day of activities is not only super-efficient.

There are other benefits like more familiarity with your tribe leader.

This means your group leader will…

  1. Learn your name know about any concerns you may have
  2. Loosen things up with some classic Mexican humor to relieve any butterflies floating around in your stomach

The end result? Having this close connection with your tribe leader will ensure you feel safer.

“My family of 3 did the Extreme Canopy Adventure and we all had a

Blast! Our tour guide Benjamin and all of his assistants were a lot of

fun, but more importantly, safe and professional! There was very little

down time between Ziplines and moving on to the other activities. The

entire staff made this a great adventure that my family would not

hesitate to do again”

“One of the reasons we like the tour so much is because our group has

roughly 25-30 participants. That is important to understand because

you do not wait 30 minutes at each zip line. Sure, you may have a 5

minute wait on one or two, but keep in mind they have move the group

of guides ahead of the group to keep everyone safe.

Thank you “Cousin Jamie” tor the great time. We will return again

during a future visit to Cancun.”
